About the Artist

Danielle Rose Baker is a native Californian, living in southern Oregon. She works in watercolor, ink and colored pencil, and enjoys both technical drawing and painting, often combining the two. Danielle grew up surrounded by art and culture—some of her earliest memories are of art museums and galleries—alongside an accomplished artist mother and musician father. She is inspired by the works of Alphonse Mucha, Vincent van Gogh, J. M. W. Turner, Alan Lee, John Howe, Alan Bean, Robert McCall, and Hayao Miyazaki. Her background in geology and chemistry, a lifelong interest in spaceflight, and a deep love of nature, give a unique combination of influences to her work. Danielle can be found at home illustrating a SpaceX launch, or hiking to local waterfalls to paint en plein air, with equal probability. She is also a jeweler, Graduate Gemologist, graphic designer, Star Wars nerd and die-hard Sailor Moon fan.

Statement of Intent

"All my life, I've been fascinated by the heavens and the earth. I spent my childhood in a rural area with dark skies and incredible views of the Milky Way. I grew up watching Cosmos, and drawing Saturn V launches and Jupiter’s moons. I love the geology and geomorphology of this world (and other worlds), and am captivated by the extreme landscapes of Iceland and other “otherworldly” places. I was born too late to witness the Apollo program first hand, but I’m definitely a Moon lover and a shuttle hugger. I love promoting human spaceflight and educating the public (or any hapless victims in proximity) as to why it’s important, not only for scientific and technological advances, but as a culture, as a species. Space is the next frontier, and without that compulsion and drive to explore, we’ll end up like the humans in Wall-E, rolling around on conveyances with no awareness of the world we destroyed or even what we’re missing. (End rant, sorry.)

"I created this body of work during the first two years of the pandemic. Making art was a way of keeping myself sane through lockdowns and surges, and the general tumult in my own life and all over the world. These have been some of the most difficult, and the most rewarding, years of my life.

Through art, I attempt to lift up myself and those around me, to remind myself that beauty still exists in the world around us, and we should always be looking up if we can.

All my life, I’ve been fascinated by the heavens and the earth, with spaceflight and the stars, as well as geology and the natural world. These are the things that spark my inspiration; I hope these interpretations will spark yours as well."
